Conseils pratiques

  • Kasubi Tombs — standing in the house of the Buganda kingsCorroborado por fontes independentes

The royal burial grounds of four kabakas (kings) of Buganda, set on a hill just northwest of central Kampala; a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a living spiritual-political centre for the Baganda. A large, traditional thatched structure (Muzibu Azaala Mpanga) with wooden poles, woven mats, and royal insignia; visitors walk the enclosed courtyard and enter the inner sanctuary where the tombs lie. Built as a palace in 1882 by Kabaka Muteesa I and converted into a royal burial ground in 1884, the site was inscribed by UNESCO in 2001; a devastating fire in 2010 destroyed much of the main building, yet the hill remains a place of pilgrimage and ceremony.
  • Namugongo Martyrs Shrine — the hill of the burned convertsCorroborado por fontes independentes

A Catholic and Anglican pilgrimage site east of Kampala where 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts were executed in 1885–1887 for refusing to renounce their faith; today it draws thousands, especially on June 3. A vast basilica and open-air shrines on the spot of the executions; on martyr's day the hill becomes a river of white-clad pilgrims walking to honour the dead. On June 3, 1886, 32 young men, pages of King Mwanga II's court, were burned to death at Namugongo; the shrine that now stands there is Uganda's largest pilgrimage destination.

  • Bark cloth (lubugo) — fabric beaten from the mutuba treeCorroborado por fontes independentes

What it is: A textile made by harvesting the inner bark of the mutuba fig tree (Ficus natalensis), soaking it, and beating it with grooved mallets until soft, flexible, and paper-thin; it has a warm reddish-brown, suede-like texture. Who makes it: Traditionally craftsmen of the Ngonge clan in Buganda, headed by a hereditary chief craftsman (kaboggoza); today it is also made by workshops in villages like Ggaba, Buikwe, and Mukono. Where to see and buy: Craft markets in Kampala (Crafts Village on Bombo Road, Uganda Crafts 2000) and workshops in the Buganda heartland; look for bags, shoes, lampshades, and wall hangings that blend heritage craft with contemporary design.
  • Basket weaving in Bwindi and Kigezi — women's cooperatives by the gorilla forestsCorroborado por fontes independentes

What it is: Handwoven baskets and containers made from raffia, banana fibre, and grasses, often with bright, geometric patterns; a dominant craft tradition of southwestern Uganda practiced by women. Who makes it: Women's cooperatives near Kabale and Bwindi, including groups of Batwa women on the park's edge; cooperatives like Agatalii and shops at Buhoma, Nkuringo, and Rushaga sell directly to visitors. How to buy fairly: At cooperatives and community craft centres prices are usually fixed and fair; buying directly from the maker at a workshop or community craft day ensures proceeds reach the artisan.

  • Matoke and Luwombo — the banana-leaf heart of Ugandan mealsCorroborado por fontes independentes

Matoke is steamed and mashed green cooking bananas, the national staple served with groundnut sauce, beans, or meat stew. Luwombo is a celebratory stew (chicken, beef, or smoked fish) slow-steamed inside a folded banana leaf so the flavours concentrate. How they are eaten: Matoke forms the soft, savoury mound at the centre of a plate, shared family-style with sauces and stews. Luwombo arrives as a fragrant parcel, opened at the table to release steam and aroma, often for guests or special occasions. Regional note: Matoke is especially central in Buganda and western Uganda; luwombo comes from Buganda, where the word means "to cook in leaves," and was originally reserved for kings.
  • Rolex — the rolled-egg street snack that became a national iconCorroborado por fontes independentes

A chapati (Indian-style flatbread) wrapped around a thin omelette of eggs, tomato, onion, and cabbage, rolled into a warm, handheld parcel sold at roadside stalls from dawn to late night. Where it lives: Everywhere, but especially around university areas and trading centres; Wandegeya Market near Makerere University in Kampala is a classic haunt. Why it matters: It is Uganda's most famous street food, a cheap, filling meal that crossed from "poor man's food" to a national emblem eaten by students, boda-boda riders, and office workers alike. The story: The name comes from a cheerful mishearing of "rolled eggs." One widespread version traces it to a chapati seller named Sula in the Busoga region in the 1990s; customers asked for "rolled eggs," the phrase compressed in the rush of the market, and "Rolex" stuck. Another account places its boom near Makerere University in Kampala, where vendors around Wandegeya popularised it among students.
  • Waragi and banana beer — the spirits and brews of hospitalityCorroborado por fontes independentes

Uganda Waragi is a clear, triple-distilled gin-style spirit sold in bottles and small sachets; "banana beer" covers traditional brews like tonto (fermented banana sap) and mbande, often home-brewed and shared socially. How they are drunk: Waragi is taken neat or mixed, commonly in bars and at celebrations; traditional banana beers are sipped from shared vessels or bottles in more rural or ceremonial settings, signalling trust and conviviality. Cultural note: Offering a drink is a common hospitality gesture; in some communities, refusing without explanation can feel like a slight.

  • Nyege Nyege — East Africa's biggest electronic music festival, on the Nile

An annual music festival in Jinja celebrating African underground and electronic music, with multiple stages, art installations, workshops, and film screenings; at around 9,000 attendees it is the biggest electronic music festival in East Africa. Across 7+ stages along the Nile (Jinja Golf Course, Source of the Nile, Jinja Showground), DJs and live acts play genres from singeli to electronic outliers; the crowd is a mix of Ugandan youth, regional travellers, and international visitors. Typically in November; the 2026 edition runs November 19–22.Ce bloc est encore en anglais ; la traduction est en cours.festival.nyegenyege.com · vérifié 19 août 2026
  • Kadongo Kamu — "one little guitar" storytelling music

A narrative music genre from central Uganda whose name means "one little guitar" in Luganda; a solo singer-guitarist tells long, often satirical stories about everyday life, morality, and politics. A bass-forward, gently pulsating guitar ostinato under conversational, chantlike vocals in Luganda; songs unfold like spoken tales rather than dance tracks. Emerged in Buganda in the early 1950s from traditional Baganda music and oral storytelling, bridging folk song and modern popular music.
  • Baakisimba — the royal drum dance of BugandaCorroborado por fontes independentes

A traditional dance and drumming style from the Buganda kingdom, performed at celebrations and royal functions, built on multi-layered 6/8 rhythms and energetic waist movements. One legend says the rhythm was inspired by Kabaka Ssuuna II in the late 1800s; amused by his slightly drunken, quick steps after drinking tonto (banana beer), royal drummers turned the gait into a beat and dance. The main drum is embuutu, accompanied by namunjoloba, engalabi, and other drums; the pattern is a dialogue between melodic and percussive voices.
