You do not need a visa for Mauritius, but there is a mandatory digital form before boarding, and it is free: some sites charge for it, and the airport authority itself warns it does not endorse those services. The top of this page is verified against Mauritian and Portuguese national sources; anything not yet verified shows as "to confirm", never as a guess.

Travel essentials

Verified on 21 August 2026 against the Mauritian Passport and Immigration Office and the Portuguese consular portal. You do not need a visa — but there is a mandatory digital form before boarding, and it is free. Always confirm at the official source: rules change without notice.

Health

The Mauritian Ministry of Health requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from an infected area — the certificate is only valid 10 days after vaccination, so do not leave it to the last week. There is no yellow fever in Mauritius; the requirement is for the certificate. The same ministry states there is no rabies and no filariasis in the country, and that hepatitis A and typhoid prevalence is very low, recommending no vaccination for those. The Portuguese consular portal rates the health network as satisfactory and advises health insurance covering medical evacuation.

Passport

The Passport and Immigration Office requires a passport or recognised travel document "valid beyond the intended period of stay". It sets no number of months — unlike many countries, this is not the usual six. Travel with comfortable margin and free pages.

Exact maximum stay by passport outside the EU: the Passport and Immigration Office lists the exempt categories but does not publish a per-country day limit. Confirm with the PIO if you do not hold an EU passport.

Arrival & Safety

Airport

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (code MRU), in the south of the island — locals call it Plaisance. Arrive with the All-in-One form already completed: the QR code is asked for at boarding and on arrival. Anyone without it must fill in a disembarkation card at the desk.

Getting in

In the public arrivals hall there is an official taxi desk, past the sliding doors: licensed taxis working from an approved fare list rather than negotiation. Public buses also run from the airport to Port Louis, Curepipe and Mahébourg — far cheaper and far slower. Driving is on the left.

Safety

Reasonable, with opportunistic crime rising

The Portuguese consular portal (updated 29 July 2026) says security conditions are reasonable, but records a rise in crime, specifically assault and robbery. It advises not displaying valuables, not carrying large sums, keeping documents in the hotel safe and carrying a passport copy. We do not issue safety verdicts: this is the official advisory and the date it was written.

Money

The currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR, written "Rs"), issued by the Bank of Mauritius. Notes run from Rs 25 to Rs 2,000. The Portuguese official advisory warns against carrying large sums — bring more than one payment method and withdraw as you go rather than carrying cash.

Connectivity

Three mobile operators: Mauritius Telecom (my.t brand), Emtel and Chili. The two largest have shops in the airport arrivals hall, side by side.

A tourist SIM is available on arrival, with your passport. We do not publish prices because they change faster than we can verify them — ask at the counter and compare the two before deciding.

Coverage is generally good in inhabited areas; prepare offline maps for the interior and mountain roads.

Practical tips

Best time

A tropical climate with two seasons — one hot and humid, one cooler and drier — plus a cyclone season in the southern summer. The mountainous interior is noticeably cooler and wetter than the coast, so the weather in Port Louis is not the weather in Curepipe.

Languages

Mauritian Creole is the everyday language and is spoken by almost everyone. English is the language of administration and schooling, French dominates media and social life, and Bhojpuri, Hindi, Tamil, Mandarin and other community languages are widely heard. Switching language mid-conversation is ordinary and is not a lapse in manners.

Etiquette

Greet before asking, treat elders with deference, and be discreet photographing people and temples. The island is multi-religious: removing shoes and covering shoulders at temples and mosques is expected. The rest of the practical guide is in preparation.

What to see & culture

Places

Le Morne Brabant, the UNESCO-listed mountain that sheltered people who had escaped slavery; the Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis, where indentured labourers from India arrived, also a World Heritage site; Black River Gorges National Park; the seven-coloured earth and waterfall at Chamarel; and the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, among the oldest in the southern hemisphere.

Culture

An island with no indigenous population, settled by successive arrivals — Dutch, French, British, African, Indian and Chinese — that layered rather than replaced one another. Independent since 1968. From that comes sega, the music and dance born among enslaved people and now recognised by UNESCO, and a calendar in which Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Chinese festivals follow one another through the year.

Food

One of the Indian Ocean's most thoroughly mixed cuisines: dholl puri and roti sold at market gates, Indian curries beside Chinese-influenced mine frit, tomato rougaille of Creole root, and mazavaroo and other chilli pastes alongside almost everything. Fish and seafood arrive fresh, and the island's rum has a long production history.

Le Morne is a basaltic peninsula in southwestern Mauritius, inscribed as a UNESCO Cultural Landscape for its role as a refuge for escaped slaves (maroons). Oral tradition holds that in 1835, when soldiers climbed the mountain to announce emancipation, some maroons—fearing recapture—leapt from the cliffs; the story is contested but widely commemorated.
