Thailand is in preparation. We are building the guide from official sources, section by section. Anything not yet verified shows as "to confirm", never as a guess. Leave your email and we will tell you when the essentials are ready.

Travel essentials

We have not yet verified Thailand entry and visa rules against an official source, so we do not publish them. Rules vary by passport and change; confirm with the Thai authorities before planning.

⚠️ Border rules change without notice. Always confirm with the official source (consulate, immigration, travel.state.gov, gov.uk, Portal das Comunidades) before travelling.

Health

Health requirements to be confirmed with an official source. See a travel medicine clinic before booking.

Passport

Minimum passport validity to be confirmed. As a prudent rule, travel with validity to spare and free pages.

To confirm (not published as fact):

  • Entry rules and length of stay by passport, including any electronic authorisation: to confirm with an official Thai source.
  • Health requirements and recommendations by region, including dengue and malaria risk areas: to confirm with an official source.
  • Rules on hiring and riding motorbikes, insurance and international permits: to confirm before publishing any advice.

Practical tips

Best time

A tropical climate with three seasons: hot, rainy and cool. The monsoons do not reach both coasts at the same time, so when it is raining in Phuket it can be dry on Koh Samui. The north gets noticeably cooler between November and February.

Languages

Thai is tonal and has its own alphabet: the same syllable in a different tone is a different word. English circulates well in tourist areas and less outside them. Malay is heard in the south and Isan, close to Lao, in the northeast.

Etiquette

The head is the highest part of the body and the feet the lowest: do not touch anyone's head or point with your feet. Take your shoes off in homes and temples, cover shoulders and knees at temples, and treat Buddha images with respect, including decorative ones. The rest of the practical guide is in preparation.

What to see & culture

Places

The Grand Palace and Wat Pho in Bangkok; the ruins of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, both World Heritage sites; the mountain temples around Chiang Mai; Khao Sok National Park and its ancient forest; and the islands on either side of the isthmus, which have different good seasons.

Culture

The only country in Southeast Asia never colonised, which shows in the continuity of the monarchy and of Theravada Buddhism in daily life. Ordaining as a monk for a short period is common, festivals follow the lunar calendar, and muay thai is a national sport before it is an attraction.

Food

Four flavours in balance — spicy, sour, sweet and salty — and four clearly distinct regional cuisines. Pad thai is the best-known dish abroad; inside the country som tam from the northeast, the coconut-milk curries of the south and northern khao soi matter more. Eating on the street is the norm, not the exception.

  • Ayutthaya — the city that traded with the world

The city of Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 and served as the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, or Siam. It was a globally important city, a commercial centre with diplomatic connections in India, China, Japan, as well as in Europe. The Ayutthaya Historical Park was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1991.www.discoverythailand.com · checked 19 Aug 2026
  • Sukhothai — the birthplace of Thai cultureCorroborado por fontes independentes

Sukhothai or Sukhothai Historical Park was the former capital of the Kingdom of Sukhothai (1248-1438 CE), which was founded by King Si Inthrathit and was the first in a series of independent polities that would eventually coalesce together to form what is present-day Thailand. The effervescence of culture in this city during the 13th and 14th centuries CE has left an indelible imprint on Thai art, language, and politics, and Sukhothai is still revered as the birthplace of Thai culture by Thais today.www.worldhistory.org · checked 19 Aug 2026

  • Bangkok's Yaowarat (Chinatown) — the street-food epicenterCorroborado por fontes independentes

Bangkok is, by almost universal agreement among chefs, food writers, and obsessive travelers, the greatest street food city on the planet. Yaowarat (Chinatown) is best after 18:00, peak insanity—a dense corridor of stalls where the air is thick with garlic, chili, and char. This is where you find hoy tod (oyster omelette), grilled seafood, and shark fin soup alternatives late into the night.justcheckin.in · checked 19 Aug 2026
  • Chiang Mai's San Kamphaeng Craft Highway — silk, celadon, and paper parasolsCorroborado por fontes independentes

San Kamphaeng Handicraft Village is a cluster of traditional workshops, silk factories, ceramics studios, and artisan shops spread along Highway 1006—also called the "Craft Highway"— roughly 15 to 20 kilometres east of Chiang Mai's Old City. The looms are already humming when you arrive; a woman feeds silk thread through her fingers with an ease that comes from decades. Bor Sang Village alone is said to produce around 80% of Thailand's traditional paper umbrellas.Baptiste Excelsia · www.feel-chiang-mai.com · checked 19 Aug 2026

  • The Wai — greeting, apology, thanks, and goodbye in one gestureCorroborado por fontes independentes

The wai—palms pressed together, fingertips at chest or nose level, with a slight bow—is Thailand's most recognisable cultural gesture. The basic rule: a younger or lower-status person initiates the wai, and the elder or higher-status person returns it. Thais greet each other with a graceful bow called a wai; palms and fingers are pressed flat together, fingers pointing up; the higher they are held, the greater the respect.www.visitthailandtoday.com · checked 19 Aug 2026

  • Mor Lam — improvised sung poetry of the Lao-speaking northeast

Mor lam is a Lao and Isan (northeast Thailand) tradition of improvised sung poetry accompanied most characteristically by the khaen, a free‑reed mouth organ. Performers, known as mo lam, deliver long, melismatic lines that weave around a steady drone and interlocking rhythmic ostinatos. The term morlam derives from two words in the Isaan dialect, 'mor', meaning expert, and 'lam' meaning song.www.melodigging.com · checked 19 Aug 2026

🔥 Campfire · Thailand

The fire is quiet.

When a topic gathers enough people, a 20-minute hosted conversation gets scheduled: no recording, no attendee list, and never about visas. That is what the book is for.

What conversation would make you show up?

Fire rules: short scheduled conversations, never empty open rooms. No recording by default. We count presence, we never show lists. Visa and health questions go to the book, with sources, not to a room.
