The “Rainbow Nation” — Table Mountain, Kruger, Cape wines and Mandela’s history. First-world in infrastructure, but with serious safety cautions. Here is the essential, verified.

Travel essentials

European citizens enter visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism (those who do need a visa cannot get it on arrival — arrange it beforehand). For African passports the rule varies a lot by nationality; several need a visa in advance. Yellow fever is only required from an endemic zone.

PassportEntry rule
Portugal · Spain · France · United KingdomVisa-free (tourism)
Angola · Cabo Verde · Guinea-Bissau · Nigeria · Ghana · SenegalVaries by nationality (several need a visa) — confirm with the South African mission

⚠️ Border rules change without notice. Always confirm with the official source (consulate, immigration, travel.state.gov, gov.uk, Portal das Comunidades) before travelling.

💡 Travelling with minors: since 8 November 2019, foreign children under 18 accompanied by their parents NO LONGER need to carry a birth certificate and consent letters. For travel with one parent or unaccompanied, it’s wise to carry the certificate and consent from the other parent.

Health

Yellow fever is only required from (or after >12h transit through) an endemic zone — without a certificate there’s a risk of refusal or quarantine. Watch for malaria in the low-lying Kruger and Limpopo areas (seasonal) — consider prophylaxis.

Passport

Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date, with at least two blank pages.

To confirm (not published as fact):

  • Visa exemptions/requirements for each African passport (Angola, Cabo Verde, Senegal, etc.) vary and were not confirmed against an official source — verify case by case with the South African mission.

Arrival & Safety

Airport

Two major international hubs: O. R. Tambo (JNB, Johannesburg) and Cape Town (CPT), plus Durban (King Shaka) and regional airports (Nelspruit for Kruger). Both modern and efficient.

Getting in

Uber and Bolt operate everywhere and are the primary way to get around. At airports, confirm your ride at the designated pickup zones (there are tensions between app drivers and local taxis). Never walk alone at night, and keep car doors locked and windows up.

Safety

Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution (US)

Safety is the main concern: the country has high rates of violent crime, including muggings, carjackings and “smash-and-grab”, sometimes in tourist areas (Level 2, US). Stay highly aware, avoid isolated areas after dark, don’t display valuables and watch for protests that can turn violent.

⚠️ Border rules change without notice. Always confirm with the official source (consulate, immigration, travel.state.gov, gov.uk, Portal das Comunidades) before travelling.

Money

Currency: South African rand (ZAR / R). The financial infrastructure is modern — contactless card payment (tap-to-pay) is everywhere, so you don’t need large withdrawals. Use ATMs in malls and safe areas.

South Africa is almost available

We’re validating coverage and the best rates. Leave your email and be the first to know when it opens.

Connectivity

Operators: Vodacom and MTN (coverage and speed leaders, with 5G in big cities), plus Cell C, Telkom and Rain. A local SIM requires RICA registration — proof of identity AND address, awkward for tourists. The Verde Wave eSIM skips RICA entirely.

RICA registration (ID + proof of address) doesn’t mix with a quick arrival. An eSIM gives you data the moment you land, no local paperwork.

WhatsApp, VoIP and data work well, with 4G/5G in cities and tourist corridors. Watch for “load-shedding” (scheduled blackouts) — it can occasionally affect cell towers and Wi-Fi; having mobile data is even more useful then.

Practical tips

Best time

It’s the Southern Hemisphere, so seasons are reversed from Europe. For Cape Town and the Garden Route, the austral summer (November–March) is excellent; for Kruger safaris, many prefer the dry season (austral winter, May–September), with easier wildlife spotting.

Languages

South Africa has 12 official languages (English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, among others). English serves as the lingua franca of business, media and tourism.

Etiquette

An informal, warm style, but with strong personal-safety awareness. Tipping is expected — 10 to 15% in hospitality. Socially, “African time” is more fluid; in business, punctuality is expected.

What to see & culture

Places

Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope (Cape Town), Robben Island (where Mandela was imprisoned), the Garden Route, Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon. The Cape Winelands (Stellenbosch, Franschhoek) are a must.

Culture

The “Rainbow Nation” identity is tied to the anti-apartheid legacy of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, and the unifying force of the Springbok rugby team. In music, from South African jazz to amapiano, which conquered the world.

Food

The braai (barbecue, almost a social ritual), biltong (dried, spiced meat), bobotie (spiced minced meat with an egg topping) and the Indian and Cape Malay cuisines. All washed down with excellent Cape wines.
