Prepare for Mauritius

You do not need a visa for Mauritius, but there is a mandatory digital form before boarding, and it is free: some sites charge for it, and the airport authority itself warns it does not endorse those services. The top of this page is verified against Mauritian and Portuguese national sources; anything not yet verified shows as "to confirm", never as a guess.

Travel essentials

Health

The Mauritian Ministry of Health requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from an infected area — the certificate is only valid 10 days after vaccination, so do not leave it to the last week. There is no yellow fever in Mauritius; the requirement is for the certificate. The same ministry states there is no rabies and no filariasis in the country, and that hepatitis A and typhoid prevalence is very low, recommending no vaccination for those. The Portuguese consular portal rates the health network as satisfactory and advises health insurance covering medical evacuation.

Passport

The Passport and Immigration Office requires a passport or recognised travel document "valid beyond the intended period of stay". It sets no number of months — unlike many countries, this is not the usual six. Travel with comfortable margin and free pages.

To confirm (not published as fact):

  • Exact maximum stay by passport outside the EU: the Passport and Immigration Office lists the exempt categories but does not publish a per-country day limit. Confirm with the PIO if you do not hold an EU passport.
  • Cyclone season and what changes about travelling during those months: to confirm before publishing any operational advice.

Arrival & Safety

Airport

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (code MRU), in the south of the island — locals call it Plaisance. Arrive with the All-in-One form already completed: the QR code is asked for at boarding and on arrival. Anyone without it must fill in a disembarkation card at the desk.

Getting in

In the public arrivals hall there is an official taxi desk, past the sliding doors: licensed taxis working from an approved fare list rather than negotiation. Public buses also run from the airport to Port Louis, Curepipe and Mahébourg — far cheaper and far slower. Driving is on the left.

Safety

Reasonable, with opportunistic crime rising

The Portuguese consular portal (updated 29 July 2026) says security conditions are reasonable, but records a rise in crime, specifically assault and robbery. It advises not displaying valuables, not carrying large sums, keeping documents in the hotel safe and carrying a passport copy. We do not issue safety verdicts: this is the official advisory and the date it was written.

Money

The currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR, written "Rs"), issued by the Bank of Mauritius. Notes run from Rs 25 to Rs 2,000. The Portuguese official advisory warns against carrying large sums — bring more than one payment method and withdraw as you go rather than carrying cash.

Connectivity

Three mobile operators: Mauritius Telecom (my.t brand), Emtel and Chili. The two largest have shops in the airport arrivals hall, side by side.

A tourist SIM is available on arrival, with your passport. We do not publish prices because they change faster than we can verify them — ask at the counter and compare the two before deciding.

Coverage is generally good in inhabited areas; prepare offline maps for the interior and mountain roads.

Emergencies in Mauritius

My documents were stolen or lost
  1. Go to the nearest police station and ask for the police report. Without it there is no replacement and no insurance claim.
  2. Contact your consulate or embassy (contacts below) and ask for an emergency travel document.
  3. If you have photos or copies of your documents on your phone or email, show them: they speed everything up.
  4. Keep the report on paper and as a photo. You will need it at the airport and for insurance.
Medical emergency
  1. Call the ambulance number above now. Say your location first, then the problem.
  2. In a hotel or restaurant, ask reception for help: they know the nearest hospital and can call in the local language.
  3. Take your passport (or a photo of it) to the hospital, and your travel insurance card if you have one.
  4. Contact your travel insurer as early as possible: many require notice within 24 hours.
Cards or money stolen
  1. Block your cards first, in the banking app or via the bank's international line. Everything else comes after.
  2. File a police report: the bank and the insurer will require it.
  3. To receive emergency money, international transfer services work with a code and your passport.
Phone stolen
  1. From another device, mark the phone as lost and wipe it remotely (Find My / Find Hub).
  2. Block the SIM with your carrier to stop calls and verification texts.
  3. Change your email password first: it is the key to every other account.
  4. File a police report with the IMEI if you have it (on the box or the invoice).
I was robbed or assaulted
  1. Get somewhere busy and safe first. Belongings can be replaced.
  2. If you are hurt, call the ambulance number above before anything else.
  3. Call the police or go to a station; where tourist police exist, start there (number above).
  4. Contact your consulate if you lost documents or need support: that is what it is for.
Cyclone, flood or other natural disaster
  1. Follow local authorities: radio, TV and official alerts are worth more than social media.
  2. Tell someone you trust where you are and keep the phone charged; save battery.
  3. Never cross moving water, by car or on foot.
  4. Your consulate wants to hear from you in a disaster: a short text or email is enough.
Trouble with the police, or detained
  1. Stay calm and sign nothing you do not understand.
  2. Ask to contact your consulate: it is a right under the Vienna Convention, in any country.
  3. Note names, badge numbers and the station. Facts help more than arguments.
